My name is George Wells, and I am the Founder and CEO of The Wells Group.
I started the firm from an idea I developed at Stanford Business School in 2005: venture-backed companies needed access to real finance and accounting leadership long before they were ready to build a full internal finance department.
At the time, fractional CFO and outsourced accounting was not an industry. There was no obvious category. There was just a market need. Ambitious companies were raising capital, scaling quickly, and making consequential decisions without the finance infrastructure required to support that growth.

Where This Started
After eight years in investment banking and private equity, I decided to move into operational finance. I wanted to take the tools of high finance, including transaction discipline, investor judgment, capital markets experience, and analytical rigor, and use them to help transform operating businesses from the inside.
WHAT WE'VE BUILT
17 years later, The Wells Group has become a 40-person finance platform, with half the team onshore and half offshore, supported by specialists across the finance department. We have built a modular finance department: CFO leadership, controllership, FP&A, accounting, bookkeeping, data, reporting, and transaction support.
We began by serving venture-backed companies. During COVID, as our clients matured and the market evolved, we expanded meaningfully into lower middle-market private equity, growth equity, and more established companies that needed finance teams capable of supporting scale, transactions, audits, lender relationships, and institutional governance.

We have trained finance professionals not just to close books or build models, but to lead, advise, manage complexity, and become trusted partners to CEOs, investors, and boards.

The CFO Platform
Today, we are announcing the launch of the Wells Group CFO Platform, a new model for experienced CFOs and Controllers who want to lead high-quality client engagements with the full infrastructure of The Wells Group behind them.
The platform is designed for proven finance leaders: CFOs and Controllers who have worked with established companies, public companies, mature private companies, large-cap and middle-market private equity-backed businesses, and venture-backed companies at meaningful stages of scale.
We are looking for both full-time and fractional CFOs and Controllers who want to work with Wells Group clients and help define the next chapter of fractional finance.
The concept is simple: great CFOs should not have to rebuild the machine every time they take on a client.
They should be able to lead.
The platform gives senior finance leaders the team, systems, execution support, and institutional knowledge required to do their best work. The detailed execution work is handled by the Wells Group team, allowing senior CFOs and Controllers to focus on judgment, leadership, client relationships, strategy, and execution.
