I am George Wells, the Founder of the Wells Group, an interim CFO and Controller consulting firm based in New York City.

 

At the Wells Group, we oversee hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions for innovative businesses, private families, and investment portfolios. Our mission is to help clients understand how to preserve, deploy, and grow their capital. From pre-revenue startups to companies generating $500 million in revenue, we provide CFO and CPA-level expertise.

 

Throughout my career, I've worked through thousands of financial models, managed millions of individual transactions, and overseen billions in revenue. Inspired by my father's entrepreneurial spirit and guided by my mentor, Warren Lieberfarb, I earned an MBA from Stanford and eventually founded the predecessor to the Wells Group.

 

I hold a BA in Finance and Accounting from Morehouse College and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  From September 2015 to October 2017, I served as the Chief Financial Officer of Zola, the fastest-growing wedding registry and wedding company in the country. As a member of Zola’s eight-person executive team and the first finance executive hire, I was responsible for designing and implementing the finance, accounting, legal, and HR administrative functions. During my tenure, revenue grew from single-digit millions to hundreds of millions. Between January 2020 and March 2022, I was the full-time CFO at quip, where I spearheaded the company's path to profitability and led a $150 million Series B growth round, with Cowen Sustainable Investments as the lead investor. From March 2022 through August 2023, I served as the Interim CFO at Barstool Sports, overseeing the sale and integration to Penn Entertainment (NASDAQ: PENN), a publicly traded regional casino operator and leader in online betting.

 

My husband, Manfred, and I split our time between our homes in New York, Los Angeles, and Seefeld in Tirol, Austria. I am a Trustee of the Parrish Museum, a member of the Morehouse College Trustee’s Society, Treasurer of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, Co-Chair of Tate's North American Acquisition Committee, member of the Tate Americas Foundation, and serve on the Whitney Museum’s Painting & Sculpture Acquisition Committee and its Artists Council.
