Director of Finance

ABOUT THE COMPANY: 

We’re a small, dynamic accounting and financial advisory firm and are seeking a Director of Finance with 8-15 years of experience to join our team. Wells Group of New York is a 30 FTE business services firm headquartered in New York City. We specialize in interim CFO and interim Controller services on a part-time and fractional basis for high-growth businesses in SaaS, media, healthcare, fintech, and consumer goods, among other industries.

 

We run extremely flat and are looking for someone who can not only execute but also become a core member of our team and contribute to the mission, vision, and culture both in our firm and for our clients. We operate with a highly collaborative and flat organizational structure. We are seeking an individual who not only excels in execution but also seeks to become an integral part of our team, actively contributing to our mission, vision, and culture. This applies not only within our organization but extends to the positive impact you'll make for our clients as well. This is a salaried full-time position. Salary range: $140k to $180k.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

You will be providing strategic finance services for our clients (from pre-seed startups to mid-sized companies). Proficiency in handling substantial volumes of financial data, managing diverse tasks and clients with tight deadlines, and delivering transparent and comprehensive reports to management is essential. A solid understanding of financial practices is mandatory, and it is also helpful to have an understanding of accounting practices and principles. The preferred candidate will exhibit meticulous attention to detail, maintain a professional demeanor, and showcase analytical abilities. The ideal candidate is adept at balancing efficiency with accuracy and demonstrates a proactive, and self-starting approach. The candidate must have the ability to own client and business relationships, as well as the execution of tasks and deliverables.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understand the client's financial and operational strategies; oversee Wells Group team as it relates to financial modeling and the development of key metrics that support the client's strategic plan

  • Possess operational and financial business capabilities as it relates to cash forecasting, financial & KPI reporting, business operations support and support to leadership on fundraising efforts

  • Develop and monitor business unit KPIs (ex. revenue growth, profitability margins, marketing efficiencies, etc.)

  • Create presentations and compile quantitative data for purpose of decks and/or data rooms with audience in mind being investors, lenders, and/or Leadership

  • Review client monthly financials and quarterly management reporting – review for accuracy, assess business risk, and communicate key messages to client senior management

  • Build and maintain financial models, and present findings and outputs to client leadership

  • Support the implementation of the systems and processes that will help scale the client’s organization – (revenue, AR and billing tools, inventory management systems, etc.)

  • Develop and manage relationships with outside partners /vendors – including client legal counsel, CPA, auditors, banks, software vendors, consultants, etc.

  • Deliver strategic analysis that is usable and relevant for (internal or external) clients

  • Client Relationship (and Consulting Skills)

  • Manage client expectation on the bill by optimizing the firm’s infrastructure of highly specialized staff

  • Maintain "Hands on" attitude with each client – know the senior leaders at the client, understand the business challenges, know what work Wells Group is doing and why; be counted on to make key decisions as needed. Know about any issue before it turns into a problem

  • Identify opportunities to increase and deepen client relationship/s

  • Act as a true partner to the client business including on things not normally considered financial

  • Explain complex subjects in a straightforward way

  • Understand client's larger business goals and tailor work and information flow to that

  • Have a point of view and be able to articulate and defend it convincingly

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting

  • Deep financial analysis expertise

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft applications, including Excel and Powerpoint

  • Strong excel experience utilizing data from numerous sources to achieve desired results, financial modeling capabilities and desire to learn a plus

  • Comfortable when challenged with difficult, unstructured problems that must be solved quickly

  • Experience in financial modeling, cash forecasting, and standard FP&A processes (e.g. variance analysis)

  • Strong critical thinking skills

  • Strict planning / organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with all levels of management

  • Strong accounting proficiency particularly in material areas that might be relevant to a standard client

  • Experience and understanding of the specific needs of venture backed start-ups a plus

  • Prior experience in investment banking or consulting a plus

  • CPA and/or MBA a plus

  • Fundraising and/or debt expertise a plus

  • Experience working with and presenting to a Board of Directors for a client, or presenting to a similar level of leadership a plus

  • Experience in multi-client, consulting environment
