Making Men of Consequence: Rising Men of Morehouse
In 2020, alumnus and collector George Wells bestowed a 1 million dollar gift of contemporary art to Morehouse College. The George Wells Morehouse College Collection, features paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and photographs by some of the most significant contemporary artists working today, including McArthur Binion, Ivy Haldeman, Tomashi Jackson, Dominic Chambers, Rashid Johnson, Christina Quarles, Amy Sherald, Gary Simmons, and Mickalene Thomas.
The George Wells Morehouse College Collection reflects a diverse view of the art world, featuring work by primarily Black and queer role models. For Wells, presenting this collection within a predominantly Black community is of utmost importance. The entrepreneur seeks to support artists of color, educational institutions, and the next generation of curators, gallery directors, and art historians, and the gift and corresponding exhibition exemplify just one of Wells’ philanthropic endeavors aimed at promoting diversity in the arts. This collection marks a crucial step towards positioning Morehouse College as a leader in the arts.
